New Degree: Bachelor of Languages

The Bachelor of Languages is a degree which prepares students for the challenges they will face in the increasingly multicultural and international workplaces of the 21st century. The degree combines a solid foundation in one or more languages with knowledge about linguistics (the science of language), and the culture and cultural practices associated with the chosen language(s). The degree draws upon the complementary strengths of the language programs in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences at ANU. read more

Professor James Piscatori

New first year course: Introduction to the Modern Middle East

This new first-year course will be taught by James Piscatori. Professor Piscatori, of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and Wadham College, University of Oxford, has been appointed as Professor and Deputy Director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (Middle Eastern and Central Asia) at ANU from February 2008. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on political Islam and the politics, history and international relations of the Middle East.

This new interdisciplinary course will examine the emergence of the modern Middle East. It will be organised thematically rather than chronologically and its aim is to acquaint beginning students with the major historical, religious, social, economic, and political dimensions of the Middle East. Students will be exposed to lectures and a variety of readings that cover such topics as the construction of identities, the place of tradition and history, the impact of imperialism, the development of nationalism, and the reasons for revolution and conflict in the region. The course will also look at the contemporary challenges of globalisation, religious radicalisation, democratisation, and transnational terrorism. read more

Tailored Talks

The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences believes strongly in a shared responsibility for the education of ACT students and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss your ideas on our programs and ways in which we can work together for the benefit of all students. We are also keen to continue our ‘Tailored Talks’ program, which involves teachers identifying areas within their curriculum where a guest lecture from academics at ANU would assist their teaching.

We will be in touch with you shortly to arrange the best time for us all to meet and discuss this cooperation further.
