CASS Teachers Awarded for Excellence

CASS academics made up almost half of the scholars recognised at the 2019 ANU Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education.
The College’s awardees were in the categories of Teaching Excellence, Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, and Excellence in Tutoring or Demonstrating.
ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt congratulated all who were recognised.
"Whether you're a candidate or a recipient in this year's awards, you all deserve to be recognised for the work that you do," Professor Schmidt said.
School of Music Senior Lecturer Associate Professor Samantha Bennett, who won a Teaching Excellence award, described her pedagogical approach to music technology as being grounded in a strong ‘scientific underpinning, artistic realisation’ philosophy that recognises music recording and production as a hybridised scientific and artistic practice.
“Where traditional music technology programs take either scientific-oriented theoretical approaches to the subject or prioritise software competency via instructional methods of music production as a vocation,” Associate Professor Bennett says, “my approach draws on best practice from both these domains.”
Max Fedoseev from the School of Philosophy was one of the awardees for Excellence in Tutoring or Demonstrating. He said that he designs tutorials to help students internalise course material in a way that is conducive to deep learning.
“Often, I prepare interactive activities: sometimes games, other times real-life moral or political cases to analyse,” he says. “These activities are designed to make students engage with relevant theoretical content in small groups.”
Three scholars from the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics received awards: Dr Kate Flaherty, Dr Solène Inceoglu, and Katie Cox, with Dr Susy Macqueen and Dr Chris Bishop additionally nominated for an award.
The Vice-Chancellor spoke of the awards as being a celebration of not just the award recipients, but the candidates who were nominated as well.
"You are all here for a reason. Your work has been noticed by people in the higher education community. You are doing great things and we ask that you keep up the fantastic work."
