ANU ranked top in Australia for arts and humanities

The ANU has maintained its place as the highest-ranked Australian university in the Times Higher Education rankings for arts and humanities.

Overall the ANU was ranked 33 in the world out of the top 400 universities included in the arts and humanities subject rankings release. The rankings also found ANU to be the top ranked Australian university for arts and humanities research.

Dean of the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences, Professor Rae Frances, welcomed the results.

"It is very pleasing to see this latest marker of the esteem in which ANU humanities is held internationally - a reflection of the strength of our research and education across both the College of Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Asia and the Pacific," Professor Rae said.

"This in turn puts us in an excellent position to develop these strengths even further in collaboration with the world's leading researchers and universities."

Dean of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific Professor Michael Wesley said the result was testament to the quality of research and teaching at ANU.

"We are proud to have reached number one together with our colleagues at the College of Arts and Social Sciences," he said.

"In a time of global volatility, an education in the arts and humanities has an important role to play in addressing the critical challenges facing our world. These rankings are a reflection of the dedication and innovative thinking led by our multidisciplinary experts.

"I hope our global status as number one in this field inspires others to engage with our scholarly community."

The ANU indicator scores have gone up in Industry Income, and International Outlook. Teaching, Research and Citation indicators have dropped, Teaching and Research having a high weighting of 37.5%.

While the data reflects drops in the Research and Teaching rankings for the Arts and Humanities this year, it is significant to note these types of fluctuations are consistent with annual fluctuations seen since 2015 and indicate a fairly steady picture overall of the high quality research and teaching the Colleges are producing.
