GENDER, SEXUALITY AND CULTURE

Introduction  - Undergraduates-   Honours  -  Postgraduates

Introduction

How are lives shaped by images of women and men in movies and television?

How do we learn to become 'proper' men and women?

In what ways are men's and women's experiences different and in what ways are they similar?

How do gender relations intersect with race, class and sexuality?

How do everyday things and behaviours -- from mobile phones to rave parties -- become meaningful cultural objects and practices?

Whose voices are heard in the media and what stories do they tell?

These are some of the key questions explored in the undergraduate major Gender, Sexuality and Culture.

Students find these fields to be highly interesting, personally relevant, lively, topical and accessible. They comment on the “stimulating discussion in tutorials”, the “relevance to areas of my life”, the “openness and diverse opinions”, and the “interesting and challenging” subject matter. Students in these courses explore current issues and events, putting them in a theoretical context and arriving at insights about contemporary culture.

Students in Gender Studies and Cultural Studies develop their research skills, their ability to construct compelling verbal and written arguments, and their ability to think beyond existing structures and perspectives. Students are able to develop their skills in confidence, communication and interaction, which are crucial in employment success.

Gender Studies and Cultural Studies are interdisciplinary, which means that students develop a broad range of knowledge and practical skills that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Graduates have been employed in a wide range of areas, including government policy, the media and internet, education, journalism, social work, law, community work, and business.
