Dr Gerlese Åkerlind

Gerlese' research focuses on higher education and academic practice, including university teaching, research, academic freedom and academic growth and development. Current emphases include a holistic focus on the experience of being an academic, growing and developing as an academic, and career development for junior academics. Gerlese uses a range of research approaches, but has particular expertise in phenomenographic research.

Dr Jim Cumming
Jim participated as a member of an ARC Linkage Project entitled ‘reconceptualising the doctoral experience’ in 2004-07. His main research interests continue to be in the field of doctoral education, where his work is informed by theories of practice, socialisation and narrative. He is currently engaged in a project concerned with developing research graduate skills, where he working with the concept of capability in order to address the limitations of the standard dichotomy separating research/academic skills on the one hand, from employability skills/graduate attributes on the other.

Stephen Darwin
Stephen's research interests are centred on learning design and innovative teaching in higher education environments. He is also interested in the impact on teaching and learning of changing social demands on higher education and the implications of changing student expectations of learning engagement. He also researches emerging forms of curriculum design and evaluation in higher education.

Dr Linda Hort
Linda has a Doctorate in cognitive psychology and a Masters in Higher Education. Particular professional interests in cognitive development, career management in higher education, academic leadership and management, academic practice, education policy development and implementation, and gender.

Dr Margaret Kiley
Research education, including: approaches to the examination of research theses; conceptions of research and threshold concepts in doctoral education; Honours; expectations in the student/supervisor relationship; mobility of Australian postgraduate students; doctoral education outcomes.

Nyree Mason
Nyree has an Honours degree in cognitive psychology and is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Applied Statistics. Her research interests are predominantly in the fields of mathematical and statistical education and cognition. She also has strong interests in evaluation and assessment practices, as well as cross-cultural issues in education and psychometrics.

Dr Maurice Nevile
Maurice’s research focuses on the naturally occurring practices of teaching and learning. Maurice uses video and audio recordings of actual situations for education and instruction. He has particular expertise in conversation analysis and ethnomethodology, discourse analysis, and gesture studies. His research is informed by a background in linguistics and sociology, and experience as an academic advisor to both undergraduate and graduate students. He has previously researched on the nature and acquisition of academic literacy.

Ms Margot Pearson

Curriculum development and teaching, in particular inquiry learning and research-led education. Participation and advancement of women in science, engineering and technology course and careers.
