A
workshop for prospective honours and postgraduate students
in philosophy will be held in late July at the ANU, jointly
run by Philosophy in the School of Humanities and the Centre
for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE).
The
workshop will be looking at current issues in value theory,
with a special focus on areas of political philosophy, applied
ethics, global justice and cultural perspectives. The workshop
has received funding from ANU, and as such, accommodation
and a substantial contribution towards travel costs may
be covered for students of excellent potential interested
in attending.
The
workshop runs from Thursday evening to Saturday evening,
24th-26th July 2008. Seminars, panels, and discussion groups
will cover topics relating to rights and justice in a global
context, including: respect for human rights as a factor
in considering debt relief; the ethics and politics of human
organ sale from the third to the first world; and humanitarian
intervention and political violence. The workshop will also
examine methodological and other issues arising out of interdisciplinary
approaches to value theory, including the role of the sciences
in applied philosophy and moral psychology; and the ways
in which philosophy and cultural studies can work together
to, for example, explore senses of identification or distancing
in global media contexts.
There
will be plenty of opportunity for participation in exploring
ideas, getting a sense of new developments in this field
and for meeting potential supervisors. Speakers include
Dr. Christian Barry, Dr. Bruin Christensen, Professor Robert
Goodin, Dr. Jason Grossman, Dr Fiona Jenkins, Dr Rosanne
Kennedy, Associate Professor Jeanette Kennett, Associate
Professor Jeremy Shearmur and Professor Kit Wellman.
The
workshop will also provide advice on choosing PhD topics,
information about graduate research scholarships and honours
scholarships at ANU, opportunities to meet with potential
supervisors and current PhD students, and a chance to sample
student social life in Canberra.
If you
are considering honours or postgraduate work in the broad
areas of social or political philosophy, ethical theory,
applied ethics and cultural theory we would welcome your
application to attend the workshop. If your application
is successful, we will pay for your accommodation, a contribution
towards meals and between 75% and 100% of your travel costs.
