The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) offers a variety of scholarships. These scholarships are offered at an undergraduate, honours, and graduate level. Contact the relevant School or Centre for more information about a scholarship.

General CASS scholarships

The CASS Indigenous Australian Graduate Scholarship: on offer to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students undertaking full-time or part-time study in any postgraduate coursework program offered by the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. Successful applicants will receive $2,800 (tax free) per six unit course to use for any purpose. Subject to satisfactory performance, the scholarship will automatically continue with each six unit course within the program, up to a maximum of $22,400.

The CASS Summer Research Scholarships: Summer Research Scholarships provide promising students with experience of research work. This is particularly useful to students considering undertaking postgraduate research towards a higher degree. The scholarships provide contact with distinguished researchers and enable students to use facilities and materials for research that may not be readily available elsewhere. They offer a challenging environment in which students have an opportunity to evaluate for themselves, and to demonstrate to others, their potential for research work.

International Alliance of Research Universities Global Summer Program: The IARU Global Summer Program (GSP) offers students from IARU institutions the opportunity to study together during the (northern hemisphere) summer in specially designed intensive short courses. IARU GSP courses will allow students to benefit from a powerful intercultural dynamic, and to enhance their educational experience, with courses drawing the strengths of member institutions and the resources of their environments.

CASS Honours Scholarship: Up to $5000 for students currently enrolled or previously enrolled in a program of study leading to the award of a degree of Bachelor; or currently enrolled or previously enrolled in a combined program leading to two degrees, one of which will lead to the award of the degree of Bachelor with honours.

Sir Geoffrey Yeend Honours Scholarship: $5000 for one year for students studying in the fields of Political Science, Visual Arts, Performing Arts or Asian Studies. Selection is based on primarily academic merit, however consideration may be given to your choice of honours proposal as outlined in a 200 word statement. School of Art

The ANU Foundation for Visual Arts Scholarship: $5000 (dependent on year) for 1 year of an applicant's undergraduate degree. The student will be automatically considered based on the calibre of their application into a School of Art undergraduate program. For more information please contact the School of Art.

School of Art Travelling Scholarship in Ceramics: $500 one-off payment to assist a student who is enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in ceramics who has demonstrated a high capacity for achievement in his or her chosen field of ceramics. Westende Travelling Scholarship: $3500 one-off payment to assist an undergraduate student to undertake an overseas exchange (a letter of confirmation of acceptance by the overseas institution must be presented). The student must be enrolled in an undergraduate program in the School of Art and must be working in any area of visual arts, design arts or digital arts. D & M Williams Honours Scholarship in Visual Art: $5000 for one year (offered every alternate year) awarded to a student with an outstanding academic record in art. For more information contact the School of Art.

Peter and Lena Karmel Honours Scholarship in the School of Art: $5000 for one year for an outstanding student who has demonstrated a high capacity for achievement in his or her chosen field or arts practice and wishes to embark on an honours year of study. Studio Endowment Scholarship for Painting: $4000 for one year for a student who can demonstrate a high capacity for achievement in his or her chosen field of painting and wishes to embark on an honours program. For more information please contact the School of Art.

School of Art Graduate Materials Award: Stipend of $1000 per annum (tax free) awarded annually to assist all new and continuing students enrolled in a graduate program at the School of Arts. The award provides funding for materials and processes to enable students to pursue a proposed program of study. For more information please contact the School of Art.

EASS Patrons Honours Scholarship in Visual Arts: $5000 for one year for applicants who have an outstanding academic record in art and wish to undertake an honours year in visual arts.

The student must demonstrate a high capacity for achievement in his or her chosen field of visual arts practice. For more information please contact the School of Art.

School of Music

Dennis Griffin National Piano Undergraduate Scholarship: $2500 for one year for a new student who has received an offer by the School of Music in the Piano and Composition area of the School. New undergraduate applicants will have demonstrated an outstanding musical ability and accomplishment during the selection process. For more information please contact the School of Music.

Leonard and Margaret Doman Undergraduate Scholarship for Flute: $2000 for one year for a new student commencing a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. An applicant will be offered the scholarship based on their outstanding musical ability and accomplishment which will be assessed at the auditions and interview. Ruth Pfanner Commencement Scholarship: $2500 for one year for new students commencing an undergraduate degree offered by the School of Music. Students will be offered one of six scholarships based on their outstanding ability in any area of the School. For more information please contact the School of Music.

Ruth Pfanner Undergraduate Scholarship: $5000 for the program duration will be awarded to successful applicants for the Bachelor of Music at ANU. The first scholarship awarded will be to an outstanding applicant for cello. If there is no cello applicant that is judged to be of a sufficiently high standard then an alternative instrumentalist may be awarded. For more information please contact the School of Music.

National Orchestral Scholarship: Up to $6000 per year for a student who demonstrates outstanding musical ability and accomplishment. The student must be undertaking a Bachelor of Music or a postgraduate program at the ANU School of Music. For more information please contact the School of Music.

Harmony Endowment Undergraduate Scholarship: $5000 for three years with the option of four years for students who progress to honours study in the School of Music. The scholarship will be given to a student who displays an outstanding level of musical ability and accomplishment in any area of the School, taking into account those areas of the School that have the greatest need. Peter and Lena Karmel Honours Scholarship: $6000 for one year for a student approved to undertake the honours year in the Bachelor of Music. Selection is based on an outstanding level of musical accomplishment and the potential to make an outstanding contribution to music. For more information please contact the School of Music.

School of Language Studies

Ethel Tory Language Scholarship: Up to a $2500 one-off payment to assist students who are undertaking language studies overseas in an approved course as part of their intermediate/advanced level undergraduate program. A one page personal statement to the selection committee detailing motivation and financial need for the scholarship is required.

School of History

Australia-Britain Society (ACT) Honours Scholarship: $1000 for one year for students with acceptance into the honours program in History. Consideration will be given to the honours thesis topic, or proposed topic, and past results in relevant courses. For more information please contact the School of History.

Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies

School of Sociology

PhD Research opportunities in the Sociology of Safety: ANU Sociology has an active program of research focused on industrial risk and safety via our participation in the Energy Pipelines Co-operative Research Centre. We are seeking PhD students to join our research group in this area.
