The cultural and environmental heritage specialisation in the liberal arts degrees offers a range of topics that provide a background to heritage theory and practice, as well as specialist topics that draw upon the expertise of ANU staff and international leaders in different areas of heritage. You will develop your global outlook on heritage practice and our degrees reflect contemporary demands for a more comprehensive approach to heritage concepts. Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts (Cultural & Environmental Heritage)
Applicants should have a three year Bachelors degree from an Australian tertiary institution or its international equivalent. Applicants without a first degree, but with relevant professional experience and appropriate prior learning, will be eligible for admission into the Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts (Cultural & Environmental Heritage).

Master of Liberal Arts (Cultural & Environmental Heritage)
Applicants should have a four year Bachelors degree either as Honours or a combined degree in a cognate area from an Australian tertiary institution or its international equivalent. Equivalence may be met by the completion of the Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts (Cultural & Environmental Heritage).

Master of Liberal Arts (Cultural & Environmental Heritage) – Research
Applicants must have completed the Master of Liberal Arts (Culture & Environmental Heritage) with a minimum 70% course average.

Relevant professional experience for entry into the graduate certificate would most commonly include a minimum of two years paid work in museums, cultural and collecting institutions or heritage sites or employment in a relevant government department (at APS level 6 or above) or other industry organisation. Individual consultancy work or other professional experiences could also be relevant and will be assessed on a case by case basis by the program convenor according to a professional portfolio submitted by the applicant.

Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts (Museums & Collections)

The museums and collections specialisation of the liberal arts degrees will give you a working knowledge of, and critical engagement with, a wide range of museums, cultural, and collecting institutions. The content draws from case studies provided by different institutions and ANU has formed partnerships with numerous museums and collections in Canberra including the National Museum of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, the National Portrait Gallery of Australia and the National Library of Australia. These links mean that you will have ready access to these institutions and you will remain informed of current research and issues confronting museums, galleries and other cultural and collecting institutions. You may also include courses focusing on heritage within your degree.

Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts (Visual Culture Research)

The visual culture research specialisation of the liberal arts program is a multi-disciplinary field and is the only postgraduate degree of its kind offered in Australia. It combines the humanities and social scientific perspectives of anthropology, art theory and film studies with workshops using visual media and relevant software. It will develop your skills in working with visual materials. You will reach a high level of visual literacy – an ability to analytically grasp visual materials from a range of disciplinary perspectives and an understanding of the key conceptual debates in visual studies.

You will also develop a practical familiarity with a range of visual media and the relevant software for working with visual materials. Through ‘hands on’ exercises, including working alongside leading ethnographic film makers at the University, you will combine these analytical and practical skills, developing the ability and confidence to manipulate visual materials for research related purposes. Our national capital location means that you can access the resources provided through the cultural and collecting institutions and you will have opportunities to attend lectures and seminars and participate in internships in these institutions.

Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts (Writing, World Histories & Lives)

The Writing, World Histories and Lives specialisation will equip students with a deep understanding of the dynamic impact of economic and social processes of globalisation on contemporary culture, the study of history, and literary studies. The courses in this stream offer comparative, transnational, and postcolonial approaches for analysing an increasingly interconnected world. Writing, World Histories and Lives students also have the opportunity to complete an internship and gain on-the-job training that provides credit towards
their degree.

Graduates trained in this program are well equipped to work in a range of professional environments that increasingly demand finer understanding of difference and diversity on the one hand, and common goals of global citizenship and human co-existence on the other. Examples of the organisations graduates have found employment include cultural institutions, academia, the public service, non-government organisations and international institutions such as the United Nations.

Graduate Certificate in Museum Education and Heritage Interpretation

The Museum Education and Heritage Interpretation program is designed to meet Australia’s growing need for qualified professional educators and interpreters in a wide variety of museums and heritage settings. The professional networking available through ANU gives the degree an exciting national focus. ANU enjoys a strong collaborative relationship with the National Museum of Australia as well as with other major cultural, collecting and heritage institutions and sites in Canberra and elsewhere.

This degree will prepare you for professional roles developing, presenting and evaluating education, school and public programs in museums and heritage sites. You will become knowledgeable in both contemporary learning theory and in the practical skills needed to meet the learning needs of all ages and backgrounds. The degree will also provide you with effective background preparation if you wish to study a higher degree by research in the field of museum education and heritage interpretation.
