Honours

Honours students in the College of Arts and Social Sciences are highly valued and the College recognises Honours as a significant, transitional year between undergraduate studies and postgraduate study or employment; Honours prepares the way for high achievement in both. Applications for Honours are invited from ANU students and from students who have studied at other Universities.
A variety of Honours programs, including single and combined Honours, are available to students with an excellent record in their previous studies. In each Honours program students have the opportunity of undertaking higher level coursework and carrying out an independent research project under the guidance of a specialist academic supervisor.
Course structure
The structure of Honours in each area varies but in all a designated weighting is allocated to both coursework and research thesis components. With some exceptions - notably in practice-based areas - courses commonly involve two advanced level coursework courses and a 50% (18 – 20,000wds) or above weighted thesis.
Honours programs are comprised of 48 units and normally undertaken over a 2 semester period. With approval, Honours may be taken part time over 4 semesters.
