AACaPS 13th Biennial Conference

A Century of Revolutionary Change: 1917-2017

June 29-30, 2017
Australian National University,
Canberra

The Australian National University (ANU) is proud to host the 2017 Biennial Conference of the Australasian Association for Communist and Post-communist Studies (AACaPS). The conference will be held on the ANU campus in Canberra between Thursday, June 29 and Friday, June 30. The conference is open to all scholars, students, professionals and members of the general public with an interest in research on the Soviet and post-Soviet world covering all academic disciplines.

Conference background

The year 2017 marks a centenary of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia. Despite the end of the Cold War and the demise of the USSR in 1991, the legacy of the Soviet experiment continues to be relevant to the politics, economics, international relations and culture of all countries in the former Eastern bloc and beyond. The strategies of preserving, overcoming, remembering, expunging and otherwise dealing with this legacy show infinite variety and are often steeped in controversy and indeterminacy. As the Russian Minister of Culture put it recently, “The lessons of 1917 teach us that collisions based on class, estate, nationality and ethnicity are fraught with colossal losses,” adding, however, that “today’s generations must see in them the strength of human spirit and ancestral heroism”.

The conference will encourage reflection on the historical context for the study of contemporary states and societies affected by the revolutionary turmoil over the past 100 years.

Conference program

The conference will run over two full days. A call for paper and panel proposals is now open. The following panels are currently under consideration:

— Remembering Communism: what public debates on the past tell us about the present
— ‘Postsocialism’ as an intellectual construct and a lived experience
— East-West relations in an uncertain world
— New economic regionalism in Eurasia
— Politics of national identity and ethnic conflict in the former USSR

Program updates and information on special events will be added to this page as they become available.
