Ethel Tory Language Scholarship for Middle Eastern and Modern European Languages
Each year the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences and the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific (“the relevant College(s)”) may offer up to 30 awards known as the “Ethel Tory (Ethel Tory's Biography) Language Scholarship”.
The objective of the award is to provide funds to cover documented travel costs, for eligible students undertaking full-time language study outside Australia, or full-time language study of Australian Indigenous Languages within Australia.
The award offered by the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific will support Asian language study in countries in the Asian region (excluding Australia). The award offered by the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences will support study of Australian Indigenous, European and Middle Eastern Languages.
Funding for this award has been provided by the Ethel Tory Endowment fund.
Each year the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences and the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific may offer up to 30 awards.
The number of scholarships awarded each year will be contingent on the Ethel Tory Endowment fund.
Once off payment for full value.
The award will be available each year to a continuing ANU student who is:
A domestic or international student; however, international students may not use the scholarship for study in their country of birth or citizenship, and,
Currently studying language at an intermediate/advanced (or equivalent) level within their undergraduate degree as approved by the Ethel Tory Language Scholarship Committee.
Applicants undertaking language study outside Australia (Asian, Australian Indigenous, European and Middle Eastern Languages) must study full time while overseas in one of the following categories:
Language courses conducted off shore by ANU and approved for credit towards the student’s ANU degree;
Language courses offered by an approved international higher education provider and approved for credit towards the student’s ANU degree; or
A program of study, offered by an approved international higher education provider, delivered in a foreign language and approved for credit towards the student’s ANU degree.
Applicants undertaking language study of Australian Indigenous Languages within Australia must study full time in region in one of the following categories:
Australian Indigenous Language courses conducted by ANU and approved for credit towards the student’s ANU degree; or
Australian Indigenous Language courses offered by an approved higher education provider and approved for credit towards the student’s ANU degree.
Previous recipients of the Ethel Tory Language Scholarship are ineligible to apply.

Selection will be made on the basis of:
The academic record of eligible students;
Benefit to student’s personal and academic life, and need for financial support, as detailed in the personal statement in the scholarship application;
Whether the student has been awarded any other funding, grants or scholarships for language study;

Important information about applying
All parts of the application should be received by midnight on the relevant deadline to be eligible for assessment.
Applicants will be contacted using the details provided on ISIS. Should staff not be able to contact an applicant through incorrect details, or because the applicant did not check their university email, this may result in the application being ineligible or in a scholarship offer being withdrawn.
Successful applicants will be required to update their bank details on ISIS and return a sign copy of the Conditions of Award. Should this not be done by the due date, it will be understood that the applicant does not wish to accept the offer of scholarship.
I am a first year student studying language, am I eligible to apply?
Yes, you are eligible to apply. However, it is preferred that you will have completed at least three language courses at the time you apply.
I am an international student, am I eligible to apply?
International students are eligible to apply, but may not use the scholarship for study in their country of origin.
Regarding the selection criteria, which courses are considered as intermediate/advanced level?
In general terms, 2000-coded courses would be considered intermediate and 3000-coded courses as advanced.
I would like to apply for the Ethel Tory Scholarship, is there a form that can be sent to me?
You have to apply online through Apollo at the links provided. Information on how to apply and required supporting documents can be seen in the above selection criteria and how to apply section.
When can I submit my application?
If you plan to start your course in Semester 1 or winter session, you need to apply in the second round.
If you plan to start your course in Semester 2 or summer session, you need to submit your application in the first round.
When do applications close?
Students can apply at any time through the year, but applications will be downloaded after midnight on the closing date for each round. These dates can be found on above.
I have submitted my online application. Do I need to do anything else?
Submitting the online application form is only half of the application. To properly assess your application, we need the itemised quotation of travel costs from a travel agent. This can be:
A quote from an online booking page
An email from a travel agent
A note/quote on paper with an official logo
Citizenship documentation ( for International students only)
Access and equity statement (one page maximum)
I applied for the first round, but was unsuccessful. I would like to apply for the second around. Do I need to submit a new application?
No, you are not required to submit new application, but you need to notify us that you would like to reapply. If your circumstances have changed, for example you wish to apply for Access and Equity consideration; you will need to submit a statement to support your claim.
What are Access and Equity considerations?
It is one of the criteria used in ranking applications. Access and Equity applications are separated into four categories: Indigenous Australian, difficult family circumstances (not financial), rural or remote areas, disability or medical conditions.
What evidence do I need to provide as an applicant from rural or isolated area?
A certified copy of your High School certificate
Evidence of your former residence. This could be a letter stating your name and your address, such as a telephone bill, credit card bill or Centrelink letter, etc.
Itemised quotation of travel costs from a travel agent--What does "itemised quotation" mean?
It is a quote from a travel agent stating the cost of your air travel, airline and dates of your flights. You may get this quote from the STA travel agent at ANU Union court or your preferred travel agent. A quote from an airline’s or travel agent’s website may be acceptable. An itemised quote will show the cost of your tickets, but also that of electives like insurance, extra baggage allowance or a carbon offset price.
Does citizenship documentation mean that I should photocopy my passport?
Yes, you need to provide a copy of your passport which contains a photo and country of origin. This can be sent as scanned attachment at this address: EthelTory.Language@anu.edu.au. The Citizenship documentation requirement only applies to international students. Australian citizens are not required to supply this information.
Where I can send my supporting documents?
The documents should be sent as scanned attachments to EthelTory.Language@anu.edu.au. Please state your name, degree and language to be studied in the subject line of the email (eg. Smith – Bachelor of Arts/Asia-Pacific Studies – Chinese).
Does this scholarship cover accommodation?
No, this scholarship only covers documented travel costs, such as air travel and ground transportation, if necessary. This does not include travel from your home to the airport.
Does this scholarship cover ground transportation?
Yes, However, you need to provide itemised quote and receipt. It can cover bus/train trips that get you from the airport to your final destination.
When the money will be transferred to my nominated account?
We will inform you of the approximate date of transfer in the offer letter.
Would it be possible to have the details of this award added to my academic transcript?
Yes, this will be arranged once you have signed and returned the Conditions of Award.
