Wattle migration options

There are four main ways for you to get your Wattle site up and running. How you choose to proceed will depend on

  • Your technical skills and experience in web-based environments
  • The size of your WebCT site, if you are using one
  • The amount of time you have to create your Wattle site

Below are the options available to you.

NB: DO NOT CREATE YOUR WATTLE COURSE SITE IN YOUR SANDPIT. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DUPLICATE IT IN THE LIVE WATTLE SPACE.

Option
Will my folder structure be retained? Are there pre-set Labels (i.e., text headings), Resources and Activities? Advantages Disadvantages
1. Clean shell
You will build your course from scratch.

Yes. You can organise your folders and files as you build your course. No. Labels, Resources and Activities must be created from scratch.

*You can build a course from scratch, independent of any WebCT or other site you already have.

*It's a good opportunity to learn how to use Wattle.

*There's no need to learn extra, one-off procedures are there is with other options.

*This is the slowest option, as everything has to be done manually.

2. WebDAV (Option A)
You set up a WebDAV connection to Wattle and transfer files from your computer to Wattle.

Yes. You can copy already-organised folders and files from your computer in bulk and still retain the same folder and file structure you set up. No. Labels, Resources and Activities must be created from scratch. However, folders and files will have been transferred to your Wattle Files area.

*Folders and files are copied in bulk, which saves time.

*Folders and files are copied over exactly as you set them up yourself on your computer.

*The WebDAV connection you set up can be used for the duration of the course.

*Set-up of WebDAV connections may be tricky for some users.

*Nothing from WebCT is reused automatically. You have to use WebDAV Option B or Import from WebCT if you want to use what is in your WebCT course at the moment.

*You will still have to manually set-up your course.

3. WebDAV (Option B)
You set up WebDAV connections to both WebCT and Wattle,  and then transfer files from one to the other.

Yes. Files and folders in Wattle will be organised the same as they are in your WebCT site. No. Labels, Resources and Activities must be created from scratch. However, folders and files will have been transferred to your Wattle Files area.

*Folders and files are copied in bulk, which saves time.

*Folders and files are organised are copied over exactly as you had set them up yourself in WebCT previously.

*The WebDAV connection you set up can be used for the duration of the course.

*Set-up of WebDAV connections may be tricky for some users.

*Only folders and files will be transferred. Everything else has to be done by hand

*You will still have to manually set-up your course.

. Import 'From WebCT'
You will import what has been already migrated by DoI into a holding area inside Wattle.

No. Files from WebCT will all be placed in the one folder in your Wattle Files area. Yes. Labels, Resources and Activities are preserved, although they may require some reorganising, which is relatively quick and easy, especially if you have a smallish WebCT course. * This is the fastest option.  Smallish courses imported from Web CT are ready to use but will probably need to be tidied up.
* Files are copied in bulk which saves a great deal of time.
* Everything is re-used from WebCT.

You will not learn much about creating a Wattle course because the import process is automatic.
*The files that are imported from WebCT into Wattle are not organised and cannot be reorganised later without breaking links to the files you have imported.
