What?
Wattle stands for “Web Access To Teaching & Learning Environments”. It is built on Moodle as its core and also includes Wimba tools, Digital Lecture Delivery, Camtasia and more. It provides an online space not only for delivering resources but for interactive teaching and learning activities.
When?
The College will begin using Wattle for all courses in Semester 1 2010. All CASS courses will be expected to have a minimum presence in Wattle from this time on. This includes:
- the Course Outline, and;
- Digital Lecture Delivery recordings.*
Staff also have the option of becoming ‘Front-Runners’ and start using Wattle early.
In order to make an informed decision about when to start using Wattle, potential Front-Runners need to be aware of some important issues. See: Information for Wattle ‘Front-Runners’ .
* Excludes courses with written exemption from the College Dean.
Why?
WebCT has served the University well for several years now, so why change?
- WebCT 4.1 is a proprietary product and will no longer be supported by its developer.
- WebCT has fallen behind developments in technology, accessibility standards and pedagogy.
- Moodle is a widely-used customisable open-source product and is better able to accommodate interactive online teaching and learning.
