Review – ANU Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies
The ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences will be undertaking a review of the ANU Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies October 2012. The review is a periodic review that occurs to all ANU academic centres in accordance with the ANU policy on Reviews of Academic and Central Administrative Areas This will be the first review undertaken of the ANU Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies since its establishment.
The Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies (Middle East & Central Asia) forms part of the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences at The Australian National University and is Australia’s premier location for studies in this field, with a high international standing and links with its major counterparts in the Arab & Muslim world, as well as in North America and Europe.
The Centre integrates the study of Middle Eastern and Central Asian contemporary politics, history, culture, political economy, economics, and the role of Islam within the broader framework of the changing global order. The Centre fosters the study of the region’s most relevant languages of Arabic, Persian and Turkish. It also focuses on issues pertinent to Australia's interests in, and the development of its commercial, scientific and industrial ties with, its areas of coverage.
CAIS is a multi-disciplinary teaching and research Centre, with cognitive links with the ANU College of Asia & the Pacific, as well as professional association with its other Colleges. Its activities are guided by a twenty-one member Advisory Board and a group of international advisers, made up of prominent scholars in Arab, Islam, Middle Eastern and Central Asian studies.
Terms of reference
The review panel terms will examine:
- The quality, balance and range of the Centre’s offerings in undergraduate and postgraduate coursework education and its contribution to the University’s strategic education objectives;
- The quality of the Centre’s research performance and its contribution to the University’s strategic research objectives;
- How well the Centre is meeting national needs and priorities, including the Centre’s research training programs;
- How effective the Centre’s international linkages are;
- How the Centre is positioned to ensure its continuing excellence and sustainability in education and research, with particular focus on the appropriateness of the staffing profile of the Centre to contribute to the strategic objectives contained in ANU by 2020; and
- The appropriateness of the organisational structure of the Centre.

Reporting & Secretariat Arrangements
The review panel will present its final written report to the Vice-Chancellor.
The secretarial support for the review panel will be provided by the Executive Officer, Research School of Social Sciences, Ms Maria Davern. Secretarial support will include organisational arrangements for the review; prior preparation of data and other required information about ANUCAIS; and minute taker for the review.
In undertaking the review, the panel will invite written submissions from interested stakeholders. These submissions should address the terms of reference listed above, and should be received by the secretariat on email@example.com no later than 28th September 2012. The review panel will meet with the Director of ANUCAIS and other significant stakeholders it feels appropriate to meet its te`rms of reference.
The report of the review panel has been finalised and the recomendations have been accepted by the Vice-Chancellor and Dean, College of Arts and Social Sciences.The recommendations are available online.
